Oh what a disaster. Anything that could go wrong indeed did go wrong and it wasn’t the fault of the opera company! The original Gilda had cancelled and the American soprano, Andrea Carroll, who has performed at Garsington, provided some of the best singing as Gilda, in an otherwise sparse vocal evening.
The starry eyed opening of Christof Loy’s new production of Verdi’s La forza del destino was triumphant with the world’s greatest singers in the title roles - Anna Netrebko as Leonora, Jonas Kaufman as Don Alvaro and Ludovic Tezier as Don Carlo. This was casting as good as it gets and a really exciting evening was enjoyed by all that were present.
Lucia di Lammermoor was Donizetti’s 46th opera written in 1835 and based on Sir Walter Scott’s similarly titled novel. It was premiered in Naples in its original Italian version, but very soon thereafter a French version (which is rarely performed) was commissioned for the Paris Opera. Many of the great sopranos have sung the role of Lucia, some of whom have made their career as a result, such as Melba, Callas, Sutherland, Anderson, Serra, Gruberova and more recently, Damrau and Dessay.
